If you are new to the alkaline diet, one of your big questions is probably what exactly you are allowed to eat on this diet. I dont have enough room in this article to go into alkaline diet foods in great detail, but I do want to give you a quick tour of the food groups.
Vegetables
First, vegetables. It probably wont come as too big a surprise to you that vegetables are strongly encouraged on the alkaline diet. Although a few are acidifying, the vast majority have been alkalizing effect on your body. And of course, vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals, making them the single healthiest food group for virtually anyone.
Fruits
Second, fruits. As with vegetables, most fruits are alkalizing. On the downside, these foods do contain some natural sugars, but in a far smaller amounts than you would find in a bowl of ice cream or chocolate bar. This means that youll be doing your body a big favor if you begin replacing sugary desserts and snacks with fresh or frozen fruit.
Grains and Starches
The most common grains are acidifying, including corn, rice, and wheat. This does not mean that you need to eliminate all grains from your diet, but it was a good idea to emphasize less-common alkalizing alternatives, such as amaranth, quinoa, and oats.
Legumes
Nearly all beans and legumes are acidifying, which makes sense when you understand that high-protein foods tend to make your body more acidic. One prominent exception is lentils, which are strongly alkalizing. Other beans and legumes are still healthy foods, because they are rich in soluble fiber and some minerals. They simply need to be consumed in moderation.
Meat, Poultry, Fish, and Seafood
Without exception, all flesh foods have an acidifying effect. This rule applies to fish and seafood, as well as to red meat and poultry. This doesnt necessarily mean that you must become a vegan to follow an alkaline diet, but it does mean that you need to eat animal products in moderation.
