The Medifast Diet first arrived in the scene in 1981, as a weight loss plan that was only given out by doctors. Now, anyone can use it, and it is once again gaining popularity. It is said to give fast weight loss through meticulously designed meal choices. Lots of people have achieved fast and substantial weight loss, and it attracts people that are searching for a way to lose weight fast. However, like any fast weight loss program, there are risks involved.
The Medifast Plan is designed to work in two different ways:it lowers the amount of calories taken in, and the amount of carbohydrates as well. When calorie intake is reduced by half the normal amount, weight loss happens without exercise. When the body is deprived of carbohydrates, ketosis occurs, allowing dieters to boost their calorie burn.
Most American diets are full of carbohydrates, and this is what usually gives the body the energy it requires to work. However, without enough carbs being taken in, the body then uses whatever it can find for fuel, namely fat. To avoid the danger of muscle and organ damage, people who use the Medifast diet plan must also eat the required amount of protein each day. People that use the Medifast diet are also advised to get the proper nutritional supplementation, and drink protein shakes.
One of the major problems some have went through with the Medifast Diet plan is that since their calorie intake is so drastically reduced, the body goes through some real issues. Besides being hungry, dieters often feel lightheaded, are irritable, have headaches, and gastric distress. Due to these problems, the Medifast diet is often stopped before any real weight loss can occur for the dieters. The plan has to be followed carefully for weight loss of happen, and it is not a plan that everyone can grow accustomed to easily.
Those that have found success with this diet say that the body will eventually get used to the lower amount of calories, but the results are different from person to person. The Medifast diet, and any diet that severely limits the number of calories that can be eaten, puts the dieter at risk for malnutrition. The body must have the vitamins and nutrients it needs even when you are not eating as much. If you do not adhere to the plans supplemental guidelines, you can become ill or have nutritional deficiencies. In addition, since sugar is being purged from the body, dehydration can also be a concern.
If you suffer from any kind of health problems, a doctors advice should be sought before starting the Medifast diet, or any diet. When used correctly, the Medifast diet is safe, but one must be sure they are following the plan in its entirety, and not missing anything.
